How to care for yourself and others during an emergency is no longer something you need to do every day.
The simple fact is you can do a better job of it.
You can get your pets out of harm’s way during the day, but you can’t make them stay that way in the dark of night.
This means you should consider taking extra steps to ensure they’re safe.

Your pets should never be left alone in an emergency.
You must be sure they’re in their own space, not in the presence of other people or animals.
Here are some suggestions for getting your pets ready to go for a walk, for a dog walk, or for a play date.
First things next: Do I need to call an ambulance?
If your pets need to be taken to an emergency hospital, it’s essential that they get to the hospital as soon as possible.
If you can take them in, do so, and have them checked and taken to the nearest hospital, then your pets will be safe.
This is especially true if they’re still in a warm place, in the car or in your bedroom.
If your pet is still unconscious or lethargic, it could be that they are too weak to be transferred to the ambulance.
But, if you can safely transport them in your car or home, then they’ll be safe for the duration of the call.
They should be checked regularly, but it’s always a good idea to do so at the very earliest opportunity.
If it’s an emergency and I don’t call an urgent ambulance, what should I do?
Call 999 if you have a pet who is unable to breathe or if your pet has suffered a severe head injury.
If they’re not breathing, ask them to stay put until they can be taken in the ambulance and taken out of hospital.
If a dog is still in the home, take it in, and if they are still alive, keep them in the house until they’re moved to an ambulance.
If I’m taking my pets to an Emergency Vet, what will I need them to do?
Pets can be incredibly helpful to those in need, so they should always be given the attention they need, from a safe distance.
First, make sure they have a secure place to sleep.
If there’s no bed available, a crate will be best.
If the crate isn’t available, you can place the dog in a crate with another pet, or use a small, soft crate pad or cardboard crate.
A padded blanket, soft blanket or a tarp will also work well.
If possible, ensure that the dog has food and water.
If dogs don’t have access to food or water, they can also use a food crate or a crate to store their food.
You should always try and find the best food and drink for your pets.
It’s a good practice to check the food and drinks they’re getting at the vet, or ask them if they’ve ever had an allergic reaction to their food or drink.
If food and/or water is unavailable, you may need to get them a snack from the emergency vet or from the local food shop.
Second, check their vital signs.
Your pet’s vital signs are a sign of how well they’re breathing and how they’re doing.
If one is green or white and the other is yellow, they’re feeling healthy and are ready to move on.
If both are red, they need to take extra care, especially if they have any respiratory problems.
If either of their vital areas are yellow, there may be a risk of their heart failing.
If their vital area is red, there is a chance that they may not be able to breathe normally.
If neither of their signs are green or yellow, check with your vet to make sure it’s not an emergency before you call 999.
You’ll need to ensure that their vital sign is green, but also that their breathing and heart rate are normal.
They’re usually taken to hospital for their tests to determine if they need treatment.
If all is well, you should then contact the emergency services.
Third, if the pets are not breathing and have not had their vital sites checked, it may be time to get a second opinion.
This may include a heart scan or blood tests.
If these tests are positive, the pets will likely need a heart transplant.
The cost of a heart is around £1,200, but the cost of an emergency heart transplant can run into the hundreds of pounds.
The surgery itself is very expensive and it’s best to get the surgery from a specialist or private hospital first.
The heart transplant may be done at a private hospital if they don’t charge for it.
If someone can’t afford the transplant, they should also get a transplant at the same hospital as the one that performed the heart transplant, which may be far more expensive.
